2014 Quilting Goals (Updated)

I'm joining forces with:

My Button

to make 2014 a productive, fun quilting year!
I'm a goal setting, list making kind of  girl. These two link-ups are perfect for me!
Here's a peek at a few projects I have selected to get  2014 rolling:

January (DONE!)

I want to quilt this story quilt I made two years ago.
You can see it finished: HERE
Read about it's story and how to make a memory quilt: HERE

February (DONE!)

I've always wanted a heart quilt. See it finished here: Crazy Hearts
I've been making these little hearts over the past few years.
The pile is growing. I think it's time to put them together. I'm totally looking forward to this February project. I will also be including a tutorial on how to make these cute little hearts. Warning: You'll get addicted...they are so fun! Click here for the tutorial.

May (My birthday month)

(Made this CHEVRON QUILT instead for my May goal.)
So I still have this fabric I've been collecting to remake
this Hexagon Quilt I made last summer and gifted away.  These are my colors and I really liked how this one came out. I would enjoy one for myself. HappyBirthday to me!

June and July

I found these fun layer cakes in my "stash".

Summersville (STILL HAVE)

and Lucy's Crab Shack. (DONE!)

See it finished here: Beach Houses
Truth be told, I have absolutely no idea what pattern to use with them. I just loved the fabric and thought they'd make into some fun summer quilts. Any ideas?? I know some of you are pattern makers, do ya have a pattern to recommend? I'm open to suggestions. Please comment if you have any.  (Thanks!)

And finally....ugh! (DONE!)

The kit in the box, that has not made the list...yet!  This kit contains a wonderful assortment of pretty pinks, reds, and browns to make this pattern of  scrappy baskets:
See it finished here: Mom's Chevron Quilt
My intention was to make this quilt for my mom. She loved the quilt and it would be perfect hanging in her livingroom. Confession number two: it's still in the box becausee I just don't think I have it in me to make all those triangles. (Actually, while writing this post, bearing my closet full of fabric confessions to you, I'm  realizing I don't have it in me to make all those triangles! LOL!!). WoW! That confession felt good! Whew!  Okay...so now what? My mom is open to anything. I  purchased this kit couple of  years ago when I was taking classes and learning to quilt. I was doing a lot of piecing then. I've come to learned THIS  is more my style. So what would you recommend? I still want to make a wallhanging of sorts for my mom, just not something with so many little pieces.  Please comment if ya have any ideas and/or links to share. (Thanks...again!)

I'm looking forward to turning this pile of "projects" into a pile of finishes by years end!

And, to thank you, let's end the year with a Give-Away!

This Give-away is closed that you to everyone who commented.

The winner was announced here.

I'm going to put all your comments that contain any ideas, suggestions and/or links to to my "cries for help" above into a drawing for this Riley Blake Charm Pack: Pieces of Hope (21 5" squares). I'm looking forward to linking up with everyone for our:

  2. good morning Val, I love your list of projects
I found a couple large block patterns on craftsy here http://www.craftsy.com/blog/2013/06/fast-quilt-blocks/ and one of them uses large hexies appliqued onto a background

  3. So your style is whimsical with odd edges and bold silhouettes. I like that style too, but also like the baskets and order with that kind of color scheme. There are a meeeeliion ways to do triangles and many don't involve cutting little bias edges. I'll look into some links. You love the hearts, so you could even do the hearts with this group of fabric. Mary lou Weiderman does whimsy, Jan Mullen, Patrick Lose. Could you marry your mom's style with yours? Thanks for the giveaway chance!!

  4. Valorie I mostly applique so I do not have any pieced suggestions. I do have a cathedral windows tutorial on my blog which can show case those lovely prints for mom

  5. Hi Val and Happy New Year! I was thinking you could make a circle quilt (mostly appliqué) with one of your layer cakes. I think Amanda Murphy has a Bubbles design that is cute. Here it is... http://www.amandamurphydesign.com/bubbles.asp

Or you could do a variation of it... Sweet little quilt. Good luck deciding and congrats on all of your goals!

  6. HELLO, do a Log Cabin block is goes fast and you could use a lot of white to lighten or a lot of brown to darken. Thanks for sharing!

  7. On the Missouri Quilts site there's a tutorial for a wedge quilt that uses a pack of 10" squares of patterned fabric and 10" squares of a plain fabric. I LOVE this quilt! Looks hard, is easy and has a lot of visual impact. Check it out on you tube, it's not listed on their site yet. As for your mom's quilt, maybe you could make the blocks bigger and do a lesser number of them? You would still get the look without the tedious small block stitching?

  9. I would suggest the same wall hanging, I made for my mother- "carpenter's Star". I was very pleased

  10. Hi Val.
Why don't you do a wonky basket quilt - your way? I'm sure your mom would want a quilt that sings your name. Thanks for the giveaway!

  11. Dresden plate. Use a lot of different fabrics

  12. Love the kit that you have for your Mom. I'm not sure of the size but maybe you could enlarge the blocks and do fewer or maybe keep them the same size and do a diffetent layout not using as many blocks. I know you're a smart cookie and can design something. ;-) Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Thank you for a super giveaway and a chance to win.

  13. During Quilt Cam today, Bonnie Hunter was working on wonky stars blocks. That looks like a fun quilt to make and will use up quite a bit of scraps.

  14. Hi, Val. I'm loving your projects, especially for January and February.

When I first saw the quilt idea you have for your mother, it reminded me of designs I had seen in an old book I bought from an op-shop long ago. The book is called "Quilt Blocks: fast and easy projects using interchangeable squares", it is over 20 years old and the blocks in the book have a similar 'feel' to the basket blocks in the quilt that you are avoiding making for your mum. So I grabbed the book out tonight and had a look through it and, honestly, I don't think I will ever actually end up making anything from it, so, if you want it, you are welcome to it. Just email me your address.

  15. Since you're not a fan of all those precise pieces, and knowing that your mom seemed to like the basket theme - maybe create your own basic basket shape (maybe a half-hexi sort of one since you like working with hexis). You could also applique a different item on each basket, a flower, a bird, anything that reminds you of your mom. You could still put the basket blocks on point or come up with a different pattern altogether. Since it's to be a wall hanging, I like the thought of making the center an applique area for a saying of some sort (Love, Laugh, Learn; Home is Where the Heart Is; whatever!) and have the baskets surround the rectangular saying. Hope that makes sense!

  16. I am new to quilting. Maureen Cracknell has a chevron quilt as you go project that would be adorable with these fabrics.

    1. I've been wanting to do a chevron....one on the layer cakes would be good for that...plus a chevron pattern looks pretty easy. Thanks Ileen

  17. Ok, for the quilt kit: have you tried triangles on a roll ( or anything similar)? Or start/ join a Bee type group and distribute fabric for the basket blocks?
Not sure if you don't like the cutting, the piecing or both. I have just started to use die cutting and it has made a huge difference for me.
As far as your layer cakes go: I love Schnibbles, Thimble Blossoms or Kim Bracket patterns. Now off to create my own 2014 list - Happy New Year!

  18. Oh, my! You definitely have our work cut out for you. I love the idea of log cabin with all of your colorful fabrics. I think it would turn out beautifully. I am so impressed that so many of you girls already have your project lists made for 2014. You are all going to be very busy, I wish you much happy sewing and good health in the new year. genie

  19. Found pattern, Skipping School by The Tulip Patch with cute fish swimming along. I do not do curves yet, so maybe that idea for the Crab Shack, but w/o the curves for me.

  20. I so wish I was as organized as you are. Your organization obviously is productive as you have loads to show for it. Happy New Year !

  21. WInner of this give-away will be announced tomorrow: New Years Day!!

  22. Your stack of fabrics to use is beautiful. How about a quilt with just nine patches with sashing and cornerstones? Nine patches go together quickly and the fabric would be the focus. I love your list of 2014 projects! Happy Quilting!

  23. I missed the deadline for the giveaway, but that's okay. I just wanted to say about the basket quilt - why not make the basket as one solid triangle? You'd still have the baskets, but the only HST you would have to make would be for the base, 2 per block. I don't know the size of the blocks, either, but if you have enough fabric, make them bigger, so the HST aren't too small.

    ReplyDelete
  24. You didn't miss the give-away deadline (11:59) ANd I love the idea of using a half hexagon for the basket base...I can do that...THANK YOU for that idea!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Definitely set the fabric free from the kit with the pattern that doesn't work for you. Once you release it from the "triangles" I'm sure you'll find a happy answer. If you don't really care for the fabric either, then box it all up and sell it. Many blessings!

  26. Looks like a fun list! I think it's a very good idea to rethink a project that you know you won't enjoy... especially one that requires a lot of blocks. Anything that is too futzy would be an immediate UFO in the making for me.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Great list of goals, Val! Good luck on all of them!

    ReplyDelete
  28. For the basket quilt, you could do half solid and every other one like the instructions. The quilt would still have lots of visual interest but the work load would be slashed.

I have to admit, your comments make me smile! Thanks for sharing and for letting me know you stopped by. I Hope your day is awesome!
