As I proclaimed here, I set out to make a animal quilt with my second grade class.
You know how the saying goes: "Many hands make light work!" My second graders were so excited and so amazed to see "their" quilt finished. They were very inquiring about "how I did this" and I was impressed at all the details they noticed:
They noticed all the animals in the Little Critter pantograph I used:
They thought the swinging monkeys on the back were funny and liked the orange and red polka dot "trim" as they called it! (I used fabric markers with the kids and created a tutorial here if you want to see the step by step process of our creation.)
Some of the other teachers recommended I enter this in our upcoming County Fair! (What a nice compliment!) I think I will. So today I'm off to school with plans to take a picture of each child with their square. I'll get them each made into a magnet like my blogging friend Jane has previously suggested. I'll be sure to include a note home encouraging them to visit the fair this summer to see their quilt entered! (Keeping my fingers crossed that I'll be able to include a class picture with the entry!)
But, I do have to admit, what makes my heart smile the most, is that I've already noticed how it will be loving used for many years to come!
Thanks for all your blogging support and helpful comments through my process of making this quilt with the kids. You guys are the very best!
With smiles,
Val:)

What a wonderful quilt, pictures and post. This makes me smile. I'm glad you are entering it into the county fair.
ReplyDeleteStunning!!! Love it.
ReplyDeleteIt's good to see it being used
ReplyDeleteWhat a great project and it turned out so stunning.
ReplyDeletewhat a fabulous project and how fun for the kids if brought home a ribbon
ReplyDeleteSuch a reward to see the kids pride in their accomplishment. Thanks for inspiring them.
ReplyDeleteYou all did a wonderful job! (and thanks for sharing the process) Love it when kids get excited about a project. Will the quilt be kept with the school or the teacher or is it a fund raiser? (I really don't like the fund raiser... only the rich get to have the quilts.)

This will remain in my classroom. (It's especially fun when I get siblings ...they LOVE that their older brother and sister's project is available for them to use!!) This is my third year of making a quilt for the classroom. Pretty soon I'm going to need a quilt rack! LOL!!
DeleteWhat a wonderful project. I love that the kids got excited about working on it and seeing the finished project (hmmm, training the future quilters of America are we?!?). Absolutely it should be entered in the fair! Hey maybe some body doing a wood work project for the fair would like to make your classroom quilt rack too! This way all the classroom quilts made to date could be shown at the fair.
ReplyDeleteI'm working on it Vivian!! LOL!! Good idea about the wood working project...maybe an older student through 4-H. I l'll check into that!! THANKS!
DeleteThe quilt is wonderful! The children must be so excited to see it finished! I hope you do enter it in the fair and that the kids get the chance to go and see it on display. How exciting for them (and you too)!
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice quilt. Love the animals.
ReplyDeleteI love the quilt you made with your class. I used to make quilts with my Kinders. I still have them all these years later. They are a fun treasure. Thank you for sharing Val!

What a wonderful quilt and such a super way for the students to connect with the theme and the art of quilting. Awesome!
ReplyDeleteLove the pic of the kids' hands on the quilt. How much fun was this idea? Congrats on the finish. Oh, and the quilting is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Well I don't show the kids faces or use names on my blog (aside for other teacher's kids I have in class like that little reader in the last picture...LOL!) But wanted to show the little hands behind this masterpiece. Two of the girls actually came up with this idea! At first they wanted ever one to lay lay under the quilt with their hands sticking out...but as you can imagine...that did not work out. The class pictures went well today...and they "voted" it should be entered in the fair! So cute!
DeleteOh Val, this brings such a smile to my face. I can see the love in the quilt and the joy it will bring. It is so nice each student will receive a magnet of their quilt. Enter in the fair, you bet! We would love to see pictures, especially when it gets a ribbon. Such a delight! Congratulation!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great class project! I love this idea and that quilt is super cute! Thanks for linking up to TGIFF this week!
ReplyDeleteThe quilt came out beautiful! My grandson just had his graduation from kindergarten yesterday. So fun seeing all the little ones and how cute they are.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great job you have! It is so nice to see all those small children around this pretty quilt!
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome quilt and awesome picture. Such a treasure.
ReplyDeleteAdorable! A great finish.
ReplyDeleteReally fabulous Val! I'm in the process of making another kids art quilt with my daughters' school. All pre-K and K kids. It certainly is interesting and I can't wait to show off the finished quilt.
ReplyDeleteIt turned out great, Val. Iove the critter quilting, did you design it yourself? Have fun at the fair.
ReplyDeleteI admire that you incorporated your love of creativity into a class project. Instilling that love in your students. And that it was a team effort. Good luck in the fair, you guys! Well done!
ReplyDeletewhat a great project, it turned out so cute! Good luck in the fair
ReplyDeleteSo cute.
ReplyDeleteYou must be THE coolest teacher! What a great experience for these kids to be part of a creative process making something so spectacular! Love the picture of the kids around the quilt!
