Piggy Bank Challenge Mid-Point Check-In

Click here to find my GYB/Give-Away post.

How are you doing???
We are six months into our Piggy Bank Challenge and I was asking myself this exact question when I went to the grocery store to get more Sorbet. (My current yummy treat and one of the few foods that likes my digestive system at the moment!) And yes, this fifty-two cents went right into my piggy bank when I got home.
I'm actully doing pretty good on my coin savings, but admitably stuff some dollar bills in there too. I sit here looking around my studio wondering what I want?? Maybe a really nice pair of scissors?? I don't know?? There's 35 of us linked up for the challenge. I'm especially looking forward to your comments today to see how you're doing with the challenge and what you are dreaming of doing with new found cash this July?? Maybe I'll get some ideas!

  1. My hubby has pilfered my changed and left me bills instead. My jar is not filling quickly--I think this is because I use a credit card for nearly everything I buy. I will make more of an effort for the next 6 months!

  2. Interesting idea for a challenge. I have the same issue Tanya mentioned where I pay for so much with plastic that I don't accumulate a lot of change and until recently I needed quarters for laundry so any coinage I had in my jars was pennies, nickles and dimes.

  3. I don't go out often shopping, but I clean out DH truck or mine after he drives it cause he always leaves change. Occasionally I throw in a dollar bill or any "found" money. I think I would like to buy an EQ7 program.

  4. I've been doing okay on this. My DH gets me scratch tickets every week and if I win some money he gives me the excess over what he spends to get more. I take some of that "found" money (maybe $5 or $10) and put it in the jar. Doesn't happen too often, but every little bit helps. Don't know if I'll use it for a vintage machine or for vintage car restoration.

  5. One of the best things I ever did was sign up for a program through my bank which rounded up each debit card purchase to the nearest dollar and deposited the difference into my savings account. A painless and invisible way to save money. Let's say I bought something for $14.58, the bank rounds up to $15 and deposits $.42 into my savings. To date it has saved me $1,500! That's a lot of cash. I don't even know if the bank offers this program any more but I'm I'm keeping it while I can.

  6. I had to switch plans. I am very uncomfortable about 'money' in the house. My little cash cups that I save for my grands always gets emptied and delivered to them each time I visit, but the bigger money worried me. So I decided to 'not count' money from a bank account - it will collect there were I don't have to worry.

  7. Hi everyone! Since I am using one of those "counter" banks, I know just how much I have saved. $76.61! It sure adds up fast and really doesnt look like that much, isnt spare change amazing?

  8. My sister and I are doing pretty good. We got change purses and try to empty them into the banks at least every other week. Around Christmas mine got so full I had to dump into a box on my desk, but I've not used any of it, I just need to get it moved to DiNozzo (my bank's name). I even purchased quarters from my nephew. He gets tips and had about $20 in quarters, so I bought them, and split them between my sister and I.

  9. My nut can is pretty empty... Only about $12, I didn't count the few nickels or pennies. We pay with the card, like most people. (Some of the coins collected are disbursed to homeless. Here they stand out in the 50 degree rain. It's hard to see... I'd rather the money went there.) I've already got so much stuff. You should see my sewing room.

  10. I have no idea how much I have. . . when the change purse gets too heavy I dump it. My container is not getting too high but it is getting heavy.

There is a quilt show in Somerset, NJ in March. . . I'm thinking that I may end up going into my savings so that I can make a purchase or two without busting the budget.

  11. I didn't know about your challenge Val, but I ALWAYS take my change out of my purse every Sunday and out it in a small jar that is in my dresser drawer. (that's when I usually change purses!) I cash it out every about 6 months..the jar is full and then some! So far, (2 years of doing this!) I get anywhere from $40-$50 twice a year! It is amazing how quickly it adds up over a few months!
Good going to all that are playing the challenge! I was using mine for "gambling" money... twice a year I get two free nights at a casino in Vegas and this is my gambling money! But now the freebies have stopped...so...maybe I will buy something for my sewing "studio"!

  12. I empty my change purse every couple of weeks. My change collector sits in the laundry, so any loose change or bills I find in the wash end up in my stash. I have no idea how much is in there. My plan is to buy a really nice iron with whatever I save.

  13. Honey, if you plan on winning the challenge this year your going to need more than .52 cents. I beat you last year by.....well I dont remember how much. In your defense, I am the one who does all the shopping so thats where my spare change comes from. Maybe I'll start putting every other shopping trip change in your jug.........then again ?????

    1. I'd much rather you keep doing the shopping as I continue to sneak change from your jeep! Xo

  14. I'm afraid I haven't been putting change in my piggy bank - my granddaughter has been taking most of my change to put in hers! But on the scissors front - if you are looking for a new pair, be sure to check out Kai scissors. They are light like Fiskars, but sharper than Ginghers - and a whole lot less expensive! I love mine - they cut fabric like butter!! I got mine on Amazon...

  15. The savings are going slow but what I do have I hope to put towards some more SISSIX Die cutters.
I haven't heard of that bank system before. What a great idea

  16. I haven't counted, but my pitcher is half-full, so that's encouraging. I was paying everything by credit card, but I want to get more in touch with my spending, so I started paying for most personal things in cash. At the end of the month, or when my wallet gets too fat, I empty the change and ones (carefullly!) Into my pitcher. Good luck everyone!

  17. my jar is not very full-I had some dollar bills in there but needed to use them--I don't use allot of cash, but when I do I throw all the change in there

  18. I am failing miserably! We have always saved change but we divide it between our three daughters. Now toss in three grand-babies, I throw my hands up at this point in defeat! But, do not let that fool you, I still will get myself a treat! Love the idea of new scissors !

  19. OH I am so far behind in my blog reading that I nearly missed this posting -- I have been putting back green money as well as change and currently I am up to $550 in cash saved. I was kinda shocked when I went to count it last night -- I have pulled a little from it for quilt shows and a special shop run for some Tula Pink OOP. I have also been destashing on IG and have some funds in my pay pal account. It's a good thing to -- cause now I have a big tax bill due in April.

  20. Also my hubby and i have decided that starting in March we are going to do cash withdraws at the start of the month to decrease the use of plastic and use this as our individual spending monies for the month so this should surely add to the change and loose bills cause.
