July 6th marks Bill and I's 2nd Annual Spare Change Challenge and this year we're inviting you to join us! In our household it's the water jug vs. the pig:
Last year was our inaugural spare change challenge and you can read all about my penny pinching ways and our annual "counting of coins" in last years post by clicking right here. Bill did save more than me last year, and unfortunately, this morning we went to one of those Coin Star machines at the grocery store and cashed in and this year was no different. Looser (me) had to buy the winner ice-cream! LOL!
- His jug was full and came to $102.90 in coins with twenty one dollar bills. Grand total of: $122.90!
- My little piggy came to a grand total of 39.90 in coins. But! I had $45.00 in bills. You know what that means: $84.90 for fabric shopping!!! Whoot! Woo! (I plan to save double the amount this next time around!)
- In one year of saving change and throwing in one and five dollar bills every now and then, we had a grand total of $206.52! Serious!

Great idea! I used to have a tin to put coins in a few years ago but then we opened it and I never ended up replacing it. I should start again; though I don't have cash often (use cards most of them time).

ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea, I'm in as I too am a saver. I won't share where I save my stash of $20.00 (that goes to vacation fabric finds). It's in a place no robber would think to look. I will have to buy a larger piggy bank and you can be sure dollar bills will go in there.

DeleteWhat a fun idea. We have a joint spare coin jar on our dresser. We've never checked to see how much is in it. Drama Teen used to raid it when she needed pennies or nickles for charity drives at school.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your piggy bank. Ten years ago I would have joined in, but I won't be now because I hardly use coins or notes any more. I think I have had the same few Euro cents in my purse since my summer holiday last year! Not enough to buy even a fat quarter!
ReplyDeleteVal I am leaving tomorrow for vacation, so I don't have time to do this right now. I do save my coins and my bank has a coin counting machine which is cool and adds it all up for you.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I almost never have/use cash either (even my office cafe is cashless!), but my husband is great about saving his. We usually save it for vacations, but saving for fabric is very motivating!!

ReplyDeleteThere is NO WAY I'm going to compete with my hubby though, he's been doing this for years and there's no telling how much money is in his (enormous) jar. I wonder how long it would take me to save up enough pennies for a long arm? Hmmm.
I also save my coins. Though it is a lot harder to save coins now that most of us use debit cards or rewards type credit cards to shop. If an item cost $1.12, I give them 2 dollars and bring home the change. I never spend coins when shopping. I am not sure what I will be spending my coins on as I have plenty of quilting supplies to last a long long time - plenty of rotary blades, patterns, rulers, fabric. It is fun to read how others are going to spend their change.
ReplyDeleteI too have a hubby who already saves his change and I often raid his tin for money to buy eggs from the neighbour or to go for a tea at the coffee shop. Hmm... if I kept my own can and still raided his, I would be in the black in no time!!

ReplyDeleteWe do keep our change in a secret place. (In CA you want it out of view.) We use ours for emergency gas, groceries - whatever might be needed at that moment. (We're living on SS... not a lot of extra money.) But there is always money to feed the stash...just not as much as I'd like.

ReplyDeleteWe have a money tin shaped like the TARDIS. There never seems to be much in it, but I imagine that is because it's bigger on the inside. We regularly but our silver coins in it (5c, 10c, 20c, 50c), and occasionally our gold coins ($1, $2), but we also regularly take from it for things like pocket money or something that has to be paid for in cash when we have been using EFTPOS a lot and don't have cash on us. We go through phases of buying everthing the cashless way, followed by phases of regularly using cash, so the amount in our money tin rises and falls all the time.

ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I have jars of coins that I saved years ago. I counted one up last year when we needed change for the store - I traded $96 in coins for cash in just one jar. I think I'll find that jar and start again and see what happens in a year. I like using cash for small purchases as debits and cards cost the store owner $ and if it's under $5 they pretty much loose the $.
I think that sounds like just what I needed. I was thinking about saving this year but my kids (3and5) tend to steal all the coins for their piggy banks. Guess there is no harm in trying...

I did this last fall into the spring but my hubby and I combined our change and I used the money for shopping at the quilt show in Paducah. I had just short of $120!
