Christmas Wishes

Aside form Christmas cookies, I think the lights are my very favorite thing about the holidays!
This year we took the grands to our two favorite light shows.
The first was the Scentsy headquarters just a 30 minute drive away:

They have the longest lighted tunnel any of us have ever seen.

Poppi actually got the boys to slow down long enough to take a picture with Meme as they enjoyed running, and running, and running through the lite tunnel over and over.

Our second favorite place was in another nearby town where the whole center of town is lite up!
It's magical. There's a skating rink, Santa in a boat (which our youngest thought was hilarious!)..

...gingerbread houses for the kids to play in,

and even a fire breathing dragon!

As you can tell by their smiles, it was truly a night filled with the spirit of Christmas.
It's wintery cold in our part of the world and I find myself pulling out some ol' WIP as I spend much of my time in the sewing room. I actually have two queen size quilts I'm wanting to finish this winter break and am grateful for the time to get them done. It feels good to be sewing again and I find myself thinking of ways to incorporate more of it in my new life. It makes me think of all of you and the fun we had blogging and supporting each other. So, I'll be sure to post my progress soon. Until then, let me wish you, my quilty blogging friends, a Christmas that warms your hearts as much as these two do for mine.
With smiles, Val

Be At Peace

The Idaho Botanical Garden's  Holiday Lights in Boise has been on my bucket list for a few years.
It's nestled in the foothills and it was not only beautiful to walk through, the city lights shimmering in the background made it even more spectacular!

Replace Holiday Loneliness with New Explorations!

Our holidays have become more nontraditional since being with family is not always an option. This use to make me feel lonely and sad. But over the past few years, I learned that I was literally making myself miserable dwelling on the past. This is one of those pivotal moments that I realized I was focusing all my energy on situations I can't control and even worse, I was missing out on opportunities to discover new traditions with my husband! I've learned to replace my loneliness by embracing our freedom. Our freedom to explore new ways to enjoy the holidays without all the hustle and bustle! Yes, we can sleep in if we want to and skip all the holiday cookie baking if we want.

This past Thanksgiving found us enjoying a four course meal and an overnight stay in the city. No meals to shop and prep for. No dishes to clean up. It was quite heavenly to be honest. We had a lot of fun together and found ourselves coming full circle from when we were first married some 30 years ago, grateful to still be the best of friends. We dressed up fancy and even enjoyed cocktails in the hotel lobby bar.
(Not exactly something we would do with children! LOL!!)

Hubby works Christmas too. So this past weekend we found another "light walk"
and enjoyed a wonderful steak dinner out. It was just perfect.

So creative...

ACCEPTANCE

I know with great certainly that our attitude has a tremendous amount to do with the quality of our lives. My recent readings have enabled me to understand that sadness results from resistance to what is happening. Thinking that this "something" that was so unpleasant and undesirable should not be part of my life. The past few years, the holidays have of course magnified these emotions as while most are celebrating the holidays with family, I often find myself alone, waiting for my husband to get home. I didn't know how to cope with this. Until, I realized that  I was wasting so much of my emotional energy on resisting the change that was happening in my life. There was this deep feeling reminding me that I'm in charge of my emotions.  I learned long ago, that I can accept my present circumstances even if I don't approve of them. I need to do that once again.

BE AT PEACE
My Uncle John use to always tell me to BE AT PEACE especially during the time that I was conquering Cancer at a young age. I find myself reflecting back to those lessons learned and journals kept. In my acceptance IS MY peace. It's not that I approve or that this is how I thought our family would evolve, but I do not move forward expressing regret, resentment or even rejection. With my acceptance, I have found the strength to actually begin to embrace my situation of being alone as an opportunity to be in control of my life and celebrate the healthy relationships I have.

I hope nothing more for you, my readers, that this holiday season finds you AT PEACE.
Many of us suffer loss in one form or another, and the holidays can magnify these feelings of loss,
thus I will end with this from my Uncle's writing,
grateful he left me so many manuscripts of his writings before his passing back in 1999:
"Peace comes from the realization that in any circumstance life remains filled with goodness. This situation may include a variety of unfortunate and undesirable facets, when they are accepted with insight and dealt with with patience there is to be found a treasure within ourselves."

"Anyone who searches for the rainbow of peace will find the gold of inner strength. Suffering can be seen as the dense rainfall in which the rainbow is hidden for the moment. Worry or grief is like remaining in the rain rather than standing in the sun and observing the rain from a distance, the only place from which the rainbow can be seen. This life of the sun must be present to see the beauty of the rainbow."
My friends this holiday, I challenge you, that whether it be you or someone you know, to stand in the bright and warm sun of peace rather than curse the chilling rain. Merry Christmas!

Simple JOY: Through the eyes of children...

Oh nothing fills my heart more than seeing Christmas through the eyes of children!
And boy! Don't grands seem to grow even faster than our own did? Our grand guys are now one and five and as many of you can relate to,  continue to fill our hearts with enormous JOY!

Hubby and I are having one of those "weird" holidays where we actually won't being seeing these two cuties until after the New Year. (But what a great way to ring in the new year!) My Christmas actually being spent sewing (LOL!) while hubby works.  Having always brought our girls up with Christmas's filled with traditions and family, it's taken me awhile to process the idea of being alone on such a big holiday. But as the idea grew on me, I began to find myself embracing it's simplicity as I realized:

MY FOCUS:
I've enjoyed sharing my simple celebrations of holiday JOY with you here on the blog this month. Thank you for visiting and for your kind comments.  As you know, the JOY of being a grandmother continuously fills my heart. The LOVE of my husband and family nourishes my soul. But! My FOCUS for 2019 will find me embracing new found freedoms at home and work. For the first time in thirty years, I'm living without the obligations of children. Acknowledging this has been a HUGE part of my esteem, I find myself wanting to be intentional about making 2019 a mid-life creative journey of self discovery and expression.  I'll share more on this as I write my post Yvonne's Planning Party later this week. Until then, I'd like to wish you all a holiday filled with love and...

Simple JOY: "Vintage" Sweaters

Okay....so this has been my very favorite sweater forever!
My mom made it for me when I was in college and when our Winter temperatures begin to greet us with frosty, 18 degree days, it not only gives me comfort and warmth, it fills my heart with JOY knowing it was handmade just for me by my mom. (Thanks mom!)
With that said, I never think twice about wearing it nor the cardigans she makes me until one of the younger teachers at school commented this week: "Val, I love all the vintage sweaters you wear." Bahhhh....my mom and I got such a kick out of that! I'm vintage!

Speaking of "vintage"...these sweaters below are from my youth and in in my efforts to downsize and simplify in my life, I'm "moving many things on" that I now longer use.
These sixth grade girls were literally filled with JOY to inheritate sweaters that "Mrs. Reynolds" herself wore when she was their age! They called them their new favorite sweaters!
Curious if you too have a cozy, "vintage" sweater you can't wait to wear once Winter arrives?
Sending warm Winter hugs your way!

Simple JOY: Our Little Tree

Aughhhhh the dark days of Winter are upon us and this little ceramic tree just seems to be the perfect way to add a bit of JOY as it's colorful little lights brighten our dining table.  I rescued it from a church rummage sale a few year back. Ordered replacement bulbs and since it's become our annual Christmas tree. Yep.That's it. That's our tree. Admittably, it was kinda wierd to "break" our traditions of tree decorating. Yet, in our transition as empty nesters, replacing our BIG family Christmas Tree with this new little guy has been wonderful! The holiday itself often finds us traveling to spend it with our daughter and grands....so I purchase a pine scented candle to add to the whole holiday ambiance and embrace the simplicity!
 Every morning...

...and every night...this little tree just brings me JOY.
Plus, just imagine how quick my holiday clean-up is!
Sometimes, "breaking" tradition is good.

Simple JOY: Holiday Mugs!

I awoke early this morning and found myself continuing to find JOY in my little holiday mug tradition. I mean now  I even look forward to receiving  my inevitable gifts mugs at school each year  knowing the'll be a special addition to this fun holiday collection.
My most soothing teas this season include peppermint. ginger with lemon along with my daily dose of green tea. Buttttt the absolute Best treat that brings me that JOY of feeling like a kid at Christmas again is when we mix up a little bit of this:
Stephen's Gourmet Hot Cocoa, Candycane Cocoa, 16-Ounce Can ( Pack- 1 )
I add one of those soft peppermint candy sticks to it and THAT is YUM! YUM !YUM!
Curious if you too have a seasonal sippy drink that brings you JOY?

Christmas Wishes...

"Dear Santa, All's I want for Christmas is a mini drone."
What's even more adorable about this picture is, you can't see it, but Santa is using his right hand to  show to our grand guy "how" to fly a drone as he patiently demonstrated the "trick" is in a slow liftoff. Our little guy literally skipped away from Santa with the
biggest smile on his face exclaiming to his mom and me:
"I can't wait for Christmas!"

Welcome Christmas!
Wishing you a holiday month filled with the same joy and excitement found by our five year old grand guy.

Welcome Fall!!!

I welcomed Fall today by replacing Summer banners and wreathes with Fall ones:

I noticed my roses have gifted me with one more round of beautiful blooms too:

And, yes, I'm savoring my first Pumpkin Spice latte of the season!

The rest of the day will find me spending the afternoon enjoying the comforts of home as I stitch and sew in-between loads of laundry and getting our menu made for the week. Seems the change of season also finds us not only enjoying the cooler weather, but replacing BBQ meals with comfort foods like warm bowls of chili and yummy casseroles. I'm sure I'm not alone huh.
Wishing each and everyone of you a happy, happy Fall.!!!
