A New Hexi Flower

I'm not one to watch a lot of TV but Mondays this Fall finds me hooked on Dancing With the Stars and Castle (Though I usually fall asleep before Castle is over!!!LOL!!) So I use Mondays to work on Hexagon Flowers for my Hexagon Memory Quilt.

This flower represents a childhood memory of my first learning to stitch..
The cream hexagons in the middle row of the flower have the very same gingham dog that matches this little dog needlework sampler I had started when I was very young. I love that I still have it. I love the memory of  being so happy and proud that I had my own little hoop and "supplies". I love that when my hands were small they made this. (Well almost, I've obviously had WIP my whole life!!!)
So what do you do when you find treasures like this from your past?
It's made of linen and stained in a few places.

  I'd love your input.
Do I:

A. Frame and hang it as is?
B. Finish it and frame it?
C.  Finish it and incorporate it into a quilt?
D. Any other ideas?

The answer: I ended up framing and hanging it just as it is.
He ended up here.
With smiles,
Val:)

  1. Every year I finish one or two of my moms vintage UFO's. A good soaking in oxi-clean or cascade will usually brighten them up. Love your treasure! I think your idea of finishing it and framing is a good one.

  2. Frame it with the needle still stuck into it like in the photo to show it in its authentic state!

  3. What a cute flower, and I also love that you still have this childhood WIP. :-)
I go with Marianne - frame it like it is. Would be a lovely decoration for your sewing room.

  4. Lovely flower. I wouldn't be so lucky to find a treasure from my past...maybe someone else's though. I wouldn't finish it, but I might work it into a project...or frame it.

  5. I finish and incorporate in some project. May not be a quilt, could be an apron or pocket of a house dress or anything I want to add a vintage handmade vibe to.

  6. How neat! I have a few old pieces and also one of the first quilts I ever made has pieces from my old dresses in it. Thanks for sharing.

  7. That is so nice that you still have that piece. Definitely frame it, stains and all. Preserve the memory.

  8. If it is just for your pleasure framing it unfinished might be a fun talking point when people visit. I would probably leave it unfinished because in a way you are not the same person who started it. It is a tricky decision.

  13. Hi Just frame as it is and let the needle there, also!
Maybe a note on the back explaining what it means to you!

  14. Too cute:-) If you decide to finish it, you will have time to decide it's fate while you are stitching. It would make a cute pillow with a patchwork frame. But I also love the idea of framing as-is!

  15. I have some of these =) Probably from the same age.
I would finish it. Otherwise any type of washing will erase the pattern. A quilt is the plan for mine, although I have around 6.

  16. I would finish it and put it in a quilt. But framing it as is would be fabulous too. How lovely to have a piece that you made when you were little!
