My Hexagon Memory Quilt

I'm linking up with  Lee for WIP Wednesday at: http://www.freshlypieced.com/ for today's post, I am excited to share my love of hexagons because:

My Hexagon "Memory" Quilt is a W.I.P.!!!

This WIP  is dear to my heart though: it's a 1" Grandmother's Garden and it's going to be a memory quilt! Yep! I make a hexagon flower for every special event, trip or whatever event I want to document. I'm using my 30's fabrics and match the colors to the "event". I date and title the  back of each hexagon. I store all the finished hexagons is a gallon size ziploc bag. I figured it may take me ten years to finish...but what a whole bunch of memories it will hold! (Someone smart suggested I start making the garden hexi's now too...GOOD IDEA!) Here's what my Hexagon Memory W.I.P. is looking like:

Hmmm...maybe its doesn't need a "path"??? I like the scrappy look!

Anyhoo, I just LOVE my HEXAGON W.I.P. and it totally cracks me up when family members volunteer to pick out the fabric to represent the event! (Sometimes, I bring a large selection of strips when I can't decide).Quite honestly though,  I think they just love the idea that they get to sign the back like my mom did here:
Happy memories for sure!
Val:)

  4. What a great idea, and a beautiful quilt so far.
I love 30s fabrics and have a few of the same prints in my stash. I'm making a hexie quilt, too, and it is a REALLY good idea to make the background hexies now, too.
At my last Flower Garden quilt I left them for later and it was soo boring at the end. It felt like forever to finish that quilt.

  5. wow, Val! I don't think it will take you ten years to finish with all of the progress you've made so far. It's gorgeous- and you've gotten A LOT done!

  13. What a lovely idea. It's definitely something thats got me thinking - perhaps I could do one for my God-daughter, she's only 3, so I have plenty of time for gathering.

  14. Such a fun idea, Val. You will have to take pictures of all the signatures/labels before putting it together.

  15. Great idea of a memory quilt and I like it with no path. I have seen some done like this before and it just looks like a giant patch of flowers.
