Studio Reorganized & One Tip

While I should be working on my raw edged flowers and nine patches, I mean after all, they are my June OMG....but noooo instead: SQUIRREL!!! I got back from my retreat all inspired to rearrange my entire studio! (I have no idea why!) I created a larger cutting/quilting area:

Jackson was a great help! NOT! LOL!!Okay, see that big sectional in the background....
well I sold half of it (More...cash for fabric!! LOL!!) and...

... moved my little table and chairs over there (so cozy) :
My mom would call and after the third time of dropping the phone while she was talking, she asked: "What are you doing?" Reply: "Rearranging my fabric!" She laughed reminding me that I do that every summer...in reflection, I guess she's right. But I can't tell ya how rejuvenating it is. So I spent another day rearranging ALL my fabric. Truth be told, I was hoping to go through all my fabric in hopes of reopening my Etsy shop and getting rich selling my fabric stash...LOL!! NOT!...I found myself ooohhh and auughhhh way too much and only ended wishing I had more time to create.
I emptied my entire glass cabinets and here's how I always seem to end up organizing:

I organize my STASH in a RAINBOW spectrum.

My one tip: whether it be my thread or fabric organize them in a rainbow order. I start with green.
Why haven't I finished this Metro-Rings quilt?? Until then, I 'll enjoy it here.

Here is my stash revamped:

And now that I'm all reorganized...I got back to creating. I ending up backing my crazy jelly roll race classroom quilt with these pearl rings I found in my stash. I quilted it with a bubble pantograph.
Today I plan to sew a green binding on it and put it in my back-to-school pile.

Last thing I want to do is organize my WIP hand projects as inspired by Karen who blogs at Moose Bay Muses especially as our July will be a busy month filled with travels and family. She made these adorable vinyl bags and though I love their colored zippers, I'm pretty sure mine will be organized into gallon-size ziploc bags, put into a cute basket, of course. Thanks for the inspiration Karen.
So that's what I've been up to this week...no Etsy shop reopened...but never the less, reinspired am I.

  2. I got rid of half of my sectional too and what a difference it made. The other half goes this fall - they are taking it up to the cabin and I get something new. You show yourself as color, fun, diverse.

    1. They are built-ins and were there when we bought the house! Love them for fabric...minimal dust.

    1. Twenty-five years ago my "studio" was a linen closet and a kitchen table with toddlers underfoot. :) I'm so grateful for my dream come true! I knew immediately what we'd do with that basement space when we moved here some eight years ago. Ta da!

  5. Oh it must be summertime and school is out. I come home from work and half of my secional is in the driveway. Good thing I dont walk around the studio in the middle of the night with the lights off. One year gives me just enough time to memorize where things are before you go moving stuff around again. It looks great Hon. :):)

  6. Okay--now I need to find a cute basket for my project bags--lol! I love those glass door cabinets and hearing that they are built-ins is even better--no moving to clean up pesky dust bunnies! And look how cute your jelly roll race looks on that chair!

  7. There is something about establishing order, or new order, that does seem to free the mind for creativity! I like your idea about the hand projects being kitted up together. I swear I spend more time worrying about my knitting/needlework packing than my clothes when we're going on a trip.

  8. Good for you to reasses what you have on hand. I'll be doing that when I move soon.

  9. What an awesome studio! I just love those glass front cabinets! What a beautiful way to store your fabric. It looks like Jackson approves of all of your hard work, LOL.

  10. Well, you're inspired and organized--that's way beyond what most of are (struggling and unorganized) so take advantage of it and have fun quilting. BTW, love rainbow organization! It just makes sense to the color-conscious.

  11. Love your Metro Rings quilt top even if it's not finished! At least you're enjoying it!! Did you make the pieces bigger, or is that the size of the pattern?

  14. Looks like I had better get busy here. Wish I had your space and glass cabinets. i would be happy with one for my fat quarters. I take that back, it would just be more room to stash "stuff" and to clean. Nope I'm happy with what I got. But yours sure does look good.

  15. Very cozy and inspiring. I know all too well what happens when sorting our fabrics, the Ohhh's and Ahh's do get us loosing track of what and why we are sorting!

  16. how good your sewing room looks now and the glass cabinet super for fabrics you can see at a glance what you have. Oh to have a swing room I seem to have things in every room in the house even the downstairs loo has the mini ironing board in!!

  18. I love your glass cabinets, maybe someday I will get mine. Funny how we all seem to reorganize our fabric in the summer. Maybe we are getting ready for busy fall? I sort by color too but in no particular order. Maybe I will try rainbow this year.

  26. You have an amazing studio, Val. I love the way your have it arranged and lots of great storage!

  27. Okay, Val, your studio looks fantastic but I am exhausted just from reading about all your hard work! And no, I do not think you will ever finish your Metro Rings because it looks too good hanging in your studio the way it is -- and you can't finish it unless you take it down! :-) Seriously, that one would be fantastic for quilting. I do hope you "get a round tuit" one of these days!

  28. Your studio has so many fabrics and projects on display... it's so well furnished and organised... that it looks like a quilt store... with a table for workshop! :-)

  29. I actually love a reorganize moment. You get to visit your stash to remember what's there. I have too much to remember it all. The pink chair is awesome! LeeAnna

  30. This is awesome. I have been doing something similar. It always seems cooler inside if things are in order rather than cluttered. But I get distracted by fabric that I love but don't know what to use it for.

  31. Thanks for the visit to your lovely studio! I love your glass front cabinets! I really need some of those as right now I'm using curtains on the front of my fabric shelves.
