My Sunflower Memory Quilt

I made this, my very first quilt, 18 years ago. My Aunt Cela (a quilter herself) bought me my first Omnigrid ruler, Olfa Rotary cutter and sent me home with a beginner's guide to quilting and this is what I created:
What's sentimental about this quilt is the fact that all the fabric was leftover from a sunroom we had in Arizona. (which was obviously decorated in Sunflowers! LOL!) This quilt always reminds me of family gatherings enjoyed in that room and of myself as a thrifty young mother who sewed curtains and chair cushions out of sunflower fabric!
With smiles,
Val:)

  1. Awesome post Val, I love the quilt but also the story that goes along with it!

  2. Wow - for a first quilt, a log cabin? Mine was over 40 years ago, baby sized of 5" squares in colors leftover from clothing. It really wasn't very pretty, but did the job, and she played with it for years after. I don't think it exists anymore - except in my memories.
    Thanks for the reminder.

  6. Your aunt knew how to plant a seed! Gave you the tools, and you ran with it.

  7. This is such a fun quilt. Thanks for sharing. My second quilt top was a log cabin (it took 6 years to hand quilt.) And my second finished quilt was a Sunflower mini. Happy memories. :)

  9. That's pretty tricky for a first quilt, and I love that it was made from the same fabric as other things you had already made, and all the memories that it provides, but, even still, isn't it amazing to look back and see how far you have come since then?

  10. My 1st quilt (in my teens) was a log cabin too that my mom recently returned to me. She had finished and used on a bed until she replaced it with one of her own. Memories!

  13. Well done! I have never finished my first quilt--I still have it, but every time I get it out I am so horrified by it I put it away again. My sunroom is decorated with sunflowers too--I still think we must be related! :0)

  14. That first quilt is always so special and this one has such great memories for you. Love it and the sunny fabrics too. That must have been some sun room you had.
